Short - Back and Side(s)ways?

CrabsterDrift

Callum Craddy
The car itself is still fully stock meaning it has an open diff and earlier through the day the handbrake cable snapped meaning we now only had a clutch and a right foot to keep the car sliding.

Though it was bouncing off the limiter (actually quite a lot... oops!) the engine temperature never went over half the gauge, proving that these little hairdressers cars will hold for quite a bit!

It was also my first time autotesting a rear wheel drive, the last time i went balls out in an autotest was in a 1 litre micra, meaning i was very cautious at the beginning;

There was also concerns over how long the tyres where going to last, fortunately they lasted the full day. But unsurprisingly the front tyres worn down more than the rears due to the tremendous amounts of understeer around the tests.

By 3 o clock, this is the kind of thing you could see;

EDIT: To save people there fingers and/or keyboards, I do know the driving was shit :) Don't let that make the cars look gay though, they aren't at all! Its just my driving :)

WTF Man? You know why the gauge didnt move? Because your driving round a friken car park .. around a cone, stopping, reversing, then going round said cone again.

I dont get this, at all. Not, even slightly. Its like an even more gay version of that gymnasium crap. Infact, I think your own sig sums this thread up.

I reckon you could run it with no rad at all and it wouldnt get hot in that kind of 'test'.

Im all for sprints and autox and gymkhana stuff thats fast, but autotest is fully, properly, mega gay.

I do autotests. I've even won a throphy. And yes, autotesting is gay.

It's slow speed and despite the accuracy you need any "drifting" aspect is rediculously easy because even an MX5 has enough power for first gear.

That said - what I do and what's in those videos is a million miles apart.

The challenge is to get a good time while simultanueously having a good time. You need to switch between drifting, grip, J-turns and some wand action every few seconds and when they change the course every run it can be very tricky. Sure we can all donut round a cone, but can you remember which way to donut round the right cone after J-turning out of a reverse slarlom? Mostly, yes you can, but it's funny as fuck when people get it wrong.

It's not as much fun as drifting, it's not as fast as sprints, but it is fun hooning round a car park without having to worry that the police are going to arrive. Especially if you can annoy the people who take it seriously.

i admit autotesting is gay but its there for when you have no tracks to go drifting on. I don't have a trailer to take the mx5 around on at the moment otherwise i'd be at pod for every single event!

For now my mate is just helping me out taking the car down to the autotests.

@ Captain Muppet - The times i was getting (even though it doesn't look like it) where on time with the other lad driving the mx who wasn't sliding as much. Hopefully it'l have a hydraulic handbrake for the next one and it'l be much smoother and less pissing around :)

WHY do you need a trailer to get to the pod?? Drive the car there, thats what most people do.

Gotta be honest I don't see much wrong with that, I reckon if something like that happened near me and the 14a was allowed I would have a crack.

Not sure on the quality of the driving though, I am assuming you were meant to be near the cones?

Actually, Robbs, I am 17 year old and passed my test 5 month ago. If i had the money to insure it for £3003 a year, don't get me wrong, i'd love to. I'd pay anything to drive the mx5 around if I had anyway of paying that much!

Yes your suppose to be very close to the cones for the quickest times. Hopefully the car will have a better diff and handbrake ready to get some quick times in next months autosolo :)

To get my trophy I had to be faster than several guys sharing a 190bhp Elise. Keep at it. Having a good handbrake really helps.

Sometimes sideways is the fastest way round, it depends on the course.

BTW a welded diff is a total liability in Autotesting - I can't do slarloms without wasting loads of time spinning wheels.

WTF, you bought a car that you cannot afford to insure, what a retard.
