The HOLSET Thread

Chap on here selling a hx40 with 18cm housing
I have an rb25det running a link and waiting to fit my 6boost
Looking at injectors an wastegate now

Is the 18cm housing to big?
Wanting 500ish from my neo an will the turbo take it?

it depends on how you want the car to perform 18cm will not be as responsive as the 10 or 12cm hosuings obviously. It will start building boost higher in the rev range. the hx40 is more than capable of doing 500. hx35 or hx32 will be better suited as these can also do 500 but will be more responsive. ive just got a hx32 with a 12cm hosuing for my rb25 neo not fitted it yet though but should be good......

Want it to be responsive but pull well throughout the rev range

Well I have 14cm rear in he351 (hx40 size) on 3 liter and pulls easily to redline. I wouldnt put 18 to a 2,5 liter.

Yes still same power and stock (leaking) bov. We already have snow so the skyline-season is over anyway :D used the last few weeks of the season simply enjoying the car instead of tearing it straight apart :)

Yea thought if i did buy i would need to buy a smaller housing
Anyone here selling a smaller housing to suit an rb25

Wouldn't put an 18cm on a 2.5 myself.

I have a 12cm turbine going on a 1.5JZ, and after seeing Thebe's results using a 14cm on a 3.0 I'm excited to see how responsive it should be. Hoping it doesn't choke up high in the rev range, but it should have a mega powerband nonetheless.

Compressor Racing on eBay sometimes sell the 12cm non-gated turbine housings, which is exactly what you'd want.
Twinscroll manifold and big downpipe/exhaust will also help it spool quicker.

Yea the 6boost will help. The chap doing my work willbe doing 3” downpipe. I have a 3” cat back as far as i know

If you can, try step up the down pipe to 3.5" or even 4" straight after the turbo. I know space can be tight, but Holset's respond even better when things flow

If you're taking it to a well known Northern Irish tuner from Dungannon I wouldn't even be considering a holset dude.lol
A 18cm hx40 isn't gonna be a responsive setup on 2.5.
If your 6Boost is twinscroll go for a 12cm twinscroll HX35
If it's single scroll go for a 10cm HY35

Aye bradley
He wants precision. But im only firing a turbo on to i save for a good one down the line

Posted on Facebook by a tuner in the U.K. Good results and not what most tuners would have you believe.
Full boost slightly sooner with the HY35, makes 118hp more at the same boost.

You will most likely be told that the holset is:
a) "shit"
b) "not boosting properly"
c) "won't make any more than 380bhp"
d) All of the above

For a holset setup on an RB25 i'd go HY35, 264 cams, decent single scroll manifold (if your 6boost was bought through powermax i'd be surprised if it was twinscroll because most of the stuff they stock/sell to NI is single) and a 4" exhaust from the back of the turbo, to the backbox.
This will do 500 without any fuss at a boost level that wouldn't be considered crazy - Martin Wonnacott is proof of this on his 1JZ that was on a JZX90 drift car.

You'll probably be told by a number of people in NI that 3" is better or something like that but the simple fact of the matter is, it isn't.
There's more than enough proof that 4" stuff allows for great gains in terms of response and power over 3". Some of which is probably listed in this thread too!

Not trying to slate anyone or their business in the comment, just stating what I have seen being told to mates/people I know that have used him for work.

Bought the 6boost from 6boost themselves
Had messaged the tuner about holset. Not the one i questioned though
Preferred i stuck to a garrett, precision or if on budget mamba turbo’s
Said manifold i have

Cool, single scroll T3 one then for definite.
I'd go 10cm turbine HY35 on that if you were definitely wanting to go holset. Probably get one for around 500 quid off Compressor Racing's eBay shop - they do come up the odd time, but they're normally bought quite quick.

I like how the price of holsets allows for an upgraded compressor wheel / rebuild straight off the bat and you can have something you know is in excellent condition with a bit more of your own input into the spec of it, still for less than the cost of a premium brand turbo.

However, if i absolutely had to buy a snazzy branded turbo it would be an EFR by borg warner, without a doubt.
Not read much into those mamba turbos so I wouldn't be able to comment on what I've seen etc unfortunately.

Yea ive no real knowledge about turbo’s, came from an evo with all evo turbo’s so this venturing into big branded turbo’s is new to me

Without getting into stories one thing I've learnt about him over the years is just do what he wants or he won't even try.
Not knocking his tuning at all but if you land in with something he doesn't want to tune (generally any holset) he will just give it half a go and tell you the turbo is shite. Seen it first hand.
HY35 Is a great turbo for a 2.5 as proven on this very thread time and time again but it can only perform as well as a tuner will let it.

Ah yea heard holsets are great tirbo an very underrated
What are they like with antilag? Would they smoke or give problems?
My standard turbo is holding out well an it gets some banging

I know it's daunting, but this thread is a goldmine, and has covered antilag (in all it's different perceived forms) and Holset's in detail a lot

It took me ~3 hours on and off to read it from cover to cover but i learnt more about Holsets/porting/flow/antilag etc than anywhere i've ever seen before

Gave me the confidence to grab a carbide dremel and port my factory exhaust manifold outlet & turbine housing inlet myself

If you have the time, have a read and cop yourself some learnin'

Hi guys I’ve bought a hx 35 10cm twin scroll for my 1jz soarer and after some advice. Should I use a 3” or 4” downpipe and will it make much difference. If I go for a 4” downpipe does the whole exhaust system need to be 4” thanks phil
