The HOLSET Thread

Nice turbo, going twinscroll manifold?
Keep the exhaust as big as possible. If your car isn't low and can run a full 4" do it.
4" downpipe will make a good difference even if you mate it to 3.5" system.
Best argument for a 4" system is this dyno graph.
1jz, Holset HY35, Chinese manifold, 264 cams. Only difference between 2013 and 2014 is a change from a 3" full system to a 4" full system.
Not only better figures but look how much more low end torque there is

Thanks for that yea got a sinco twin scroll mani. That’s a big difference for just changing to a 4” system thanks for the info.

Sinco FTW! 10cm twinscroll on a 2.5 will be epic. Definitely go 4" the whole way if you can fit it, but even the downpipe will make a good difference over a 3" one.

It'll be like driving a v8 with all the torque you make!

Yea I’m kind of low so hopefully will get away with a 4” downpipe and hopefully halfway underneath or some thing will have to have a look what room I’ll have

Some results from mine being mapped earlier this week on a holset.
Figures are using 1.7 Bar boost
Rough spec is as follows:

Holset HX40 w/ 12cm HX35 Turbine housing/wheel - rebuilt with 62mm inducer, 86mm exducer, 90mm tip billet comp wheel
1.5JZ 9.something to 1 compression using 97RON fuel (it's the most we can get in NI)
Sinco T3 twinscroll manifold
Full 4" exhaust from turbo to backbox, no cats no resonators - quite loud
Turbosmart 45mm gate (VTA)
SSI Inlet manifold w/ 90mm throttle body
ID1000's
Walbro 450, -8 feeds etc
BC272 cams, single springs w/ ti retainers
3" IC piping w/ 4" thick IC core

Really happy with how it drives, no drop-off at high rpm whatsoever like the oem turbos, full boost is around 3500, with plenty of torque pretty much everywhere too. Exactly what I wanted from the build, very pleased with how it performs!

Awesome result dude. Basically any bit of useful info in this thread has been read used to your advantage be it oil drains, manifolds, downpipes etc. Shows with the right combination they really can punch above their weight

Thanks lads. Yeah it was awesome to see such good results, plenty of torque, good power for the boost etc.
Was hoping for results like that as I wanted to prove a point to the many people I know or know of that just outright hate holsets or think they're laggy/underperforming turbos.

Thanks for linking that dude. I originally thought it was 612 until dave corrected me and we seen the graph, which is the reason for that caption. Couldn't be happier with how it performed, a perfect result for the holset squad!

Nice results! Sounds good too! Im sure its plenty fun to drive :p thanks for sharing
Thank you! Still scared of it for now, will probably take a bit to get used to it after not driving any RWD (or anything more than ~75bhp for that matter) for 9 months while I was gathering parts for it and it was getting built.

I know the feeling :D second winter running a majestic powerhouse 1,3liter fiesta :D

Done some minor bay tidying this weekend - front radiator cooling panel/screwdriver tray fitted, few dress-up bolts here and there, sound deadening material removed (the turbine housing was causing this to crumble into very small pieces due to the heat), some super duper stickers applied, and put my turbo blanket on.
Real happy with how it's looking now, blanket definitely takes the look off of the ugly cast iron HX35W turbine housing.

Moved the air filter just after this photo was taken, to move it a bit further away from the radiator/fan shroud.

Holset looks right at home in there!

Hello peeps,
Looking for a large 19cm+ HX40 turbine housing or if anyone knows where to find rocking horse poop, a 19cm or maybe a 22cm HX50 turbine housing
Its for a HX50 on a 4.5 litre engine, the current 25cm is quite lazy considering the current application will only be low boost

The best place to check would be Compressor Racing on eBay. I can see they currently have 2x 16cm HX35 turbine housings for sale, and they can probably get other ones in if you send them a message.
They've a couple of 19cm HX55's up for sale but its a complete unit they're selling. Wish I could make use of one, they are awesome turbos. Love how they look too!
