The HOLSET Thread

Id also look into a bit smaller housing. I have holset he351 with 14 housing on 3 liter rb30/25 running 550 HP and no issues. Running ~1.5 bar of boost

And yes holsets are mostly used by people on a budget but id much rather use a holset than an eBay special. Problems usually occur when you cheap out on the supporting mods or choose a wrong holset. Crappy design or leaky manifolds, eBay fpr, fuel pumps, injectors, no boost controll, copy mafs etc etc.

Also often people (atleast here in Finland) without ANY research or knowledge just buy "some big holset" without thinking about the size or their goals at all. They buy a 700hp turbo when their eBay injectors (or some other parts) can only support 250hp and then cry that all holsets suck.

When supporting mods are of good quality and turbo well suited for the goals and setup, holsets seem to deliver reliably.

IMO its better to invest on good quality support mods and use a cheaper (for example a holset) turbo than buying a 3000€ turbo and then Chinese copy supporting mods.

So i thought there was only 2 types of h1c, the small and the big

The small is 7 blade with and the big is 8 blade with 54 / 56mm inducer and similar to hx35

I believed myy one was the big 8 blade, however after some serious googling last few days, i have come to know that mine is a 3rd type, which came off the non intercooled 6bta trucks

Its an 8 blade but has a 50mm inducer and 18cm non wg housing, any ideas if the 11cm housing i bought from compressor racing will fit on this?

And what kind of power figures can i expect from it on a beams altezza engine?

Hi I have an H1c installed on a 4bta but I am not happy at all.the turbo is not boosting enaph and I noticed black smoke and only 5psi boost.there is no leakeges. Any help please?

Hi guys, recently bought a HE30 with a 12cm exhaust housing for my rb25. It was described as a HX35 in the advert. Im looking for around 450bhp so I can keep standard internals. Interested to hear what people think of this set up, cheers.

You need to check the Compressor map and what kind of CFM the turbo is good for.
Also good to know that a HX35 with 12cm EH will be a Fast spooler and you can even contact Stav for it, his a Holset Specialist, he success to get 470HP on an RB20DET with a RS431 I believe.

for me I used a H1E ( HX40 Predeccesor) on My RB20DET (Stock Internal) aswell.

here we are the mighty Holset thread.

Currently im building a forge Rb25 with the usual bits and bolt on bobs for the PS.
im after good response and minimal lag with 500hp, would a HX35 10cm or 12cm housing be the daddy to go for out of interest?
Also would a change of cam be beneficial or would a standard set of cams be more worth it?

sorry im sure that its been asked a number of times

12cm for sure, you could even go a bit bigger on a proper twin scroll manifold.
Not sure if 10cm would even get to 500bhp on a 2.5l engine, I’d imagine it’d be a struggle.

Tomei poncams really helped with bottom end performance on my rb25 with holset hx35

If you haven't already started buying bits I have the complete turbo setup for sale in around a month's time with 6 boost manifold, tial wastegate and full exhaust including custom downpipe.
Makes 500whp

Thanks for the info Joe, im glad you said that as i was starting to sway towards the 10cm but if thats not going to reach the power levels im after then it will have to be the bigger housing. from 12cm what the next size up out of interest?

PMed buddy,
out of interest what lift/ duration are your Tomei Cams?

It's only anecdotal really; I've been chatting to two 1J guys who run them and they've struggled to make 500bhp even on the 12cm housing, however neither run proper twin scroll manifolds and I don't know the rest of their spec.

I'm going to run the HX35 12cm on a proper divided manifold, as big a downpipe as I can physically fit (see stavtech post here on this )
also link ecu, big injectors etc etc and see what I can make. I'm putting this set up together over the winter so it'll be next year before I have any solid results.

The next size up is 14cm, which again I'm sure would be fine on 2.5L twin scroll but I'm wanting a bigger low down kick rather than top end. I really just want my dyno printout to start with a 5 for vanity purposes.

Jesus matey now thats some food for thought, i now have to start thinking about how larger downpipe i can fit in the bay now haha.
yea a 12cm housing is starting to sound like the one to go for as im also looking for a less laggy setup which by the sounds of it a fooking large downpipe will certainly help with.
i dont think my RB will be built by winter though as its going in to get the block and head checked, measured and possibly skimmed.
soooo much to do so little time

this is a long/interesting thread. i've got a nissan ca18det 4 port

HKS 272 8.5mm cams
Tomei valve springs
Wiseco 83.50
Pauter X-beam rods
ACLH rod/main bearings
Cometic gaskets
ca18de 80.000 km low mileage crank
All new and being weight out and balanced.

new Holset HE221w 6cm billet (not from ebay or China)
Haltech e8 stand alone

when the car has been on the bank I will complete this forum and share how a HE221w does it on a ca18det

*Edit*.
A year later i've got:
Siemens 875cc injectors (new from shop)
60mm sr20de throttle body
Head+sump oil drain mod

And a option to buy a Holset hy35 7cm t2 flange

Or putt a larger turbine wheel in the he221
The he221 i allready have has a larger billet compressor wheel, dont know the sizes.

Should i try the he221 or go for the hy35?
Aiming for 300 whp

Engine and he221 0 kilometers used

Hi all, I was wondering if you could give some advice.

Ok here’s the story. Sorry for long read. I have a HX32 for an rb25, I had an an10 drain. Discovered it was too small for the holset.

Oil didn’t drain quick enough, and leaked out core. I made up a 20mm ID steel drain for the turbo. I decided to take the turbo apart to clean it as I feared it was contaminated from being in the shed (it was) so i rebuilt it with China kit. After a few mins idling, It leaked oil out compressor side. I later found out the part numbers weren’t compatible (although the parts looked identical ?) I thought ok I will source a quality kit(Mellet) specifically for the Hx32w. But sadly it’s leaking again from the compressor side. You can see the oil coming out the compressor wheel.

I read on mellet they can leak at idle ? but will get not leak if upto engine speeds. I cannot get upto engine speeds as it’s a project and needs mapped etc and bits and bobs. But it didn’t leak oil before I rebuilt it and again it only idled.

I have double checked all the usuals. My Drain isn’t blocked. the drain is basically bang on vertical. I have disconnected the oil breather lines.

It’s an An4 feed. Do you think I should try a restrictor? I know a restrictor should not be necessary though... I’m fed up and on the verge of just buying another turbo but I’d rather not as I’m sure you know a genuine holset HX32 is hard to come by. Thinking of buying hx35 chra and putting my 32 stuff on it.

The current oil level is a little on the low side, however still between min and max. Maybe it needs more oil to build pressure perhaps ?

Thanks.

done some more research. I have found a very interesting coupe of videos on journal bearings.

The guy doesn’t even use the “oil seal” in the 2nd video. And still doesn’t leak oil.

Although I checked the drain tube and is clear. I will now check the fitting into the block as that could be blocked, socket etc etc. Or one or both oil cavities to the bearings could have a tiny bit of Debris blocking them.

I also found turbo lab of America suggested minimum thickness of 10w-30 with journals as *sometimes* oil can get out if the oil isn’t thick enough. Interestingly I changed to 5w50 (although recommend for rb25s) around the time I changed the turbo to the holset.

My next steps are inspect drain fitting and give a good clean to both journal feed cavities. If no success I will change oil to some sort of 10w.

On my rb25 Im using an3 feed line and 20mm return line with zero issues (holset he351w). I even have my vct return line t'd to the turbo return/drain line and no issues. Running on 5w40 oil. Has been running for 3 or 4 years (summers) now.

thanks for the reply. The oil weight is probably not the issue then.... I’m hoping it’s something simple.... it’s driving me round the bend.

do you have a link for the an3 feed ? Or was it made up ?

thanks

I also doubt oil weight would be the issue .

I made the feed line myself. Bought hose and fittings from torques_uk eBay store and they felt good quality.

Okay nice one I was considering making one up anyway as the one I bought off conceptua is too short as it sits on the manifold.
Cheers
