The HOLSET Thread

Hey Guys,
Today I plan to put an H1E On my RB20DET!
We have almost weld the Wastegate pipe (For à TIAL MVR 44mm on the Turbo Housing !
I will put some pictures this afternoon!

But a question for all of you !
Do you thing the H1E can be good on the RB20 ?!
@Stavros what do you think about ?!

Aside from the fact that there are several spec H1Es, they are basically old versions of the HX40, i.e. not a small turbo for a 2ltr. Is yours a 16cm T3 unit?

Re whether or not it'll be "good" - all depends on what you want out of your engine, but regardless of what you do it won't be fast spooling given the size of it. If you want big power then there obviously isn't a way around that, so again, what do you want out of it? They are 600-700bhp turbos depending on spec.

You're already cracking on with it though so you must have done some research before diving into it all? I never understand people who go and buy something and then ask if it's any good.
 
It’s a 14 T3 Exhaust housing !
I know by background that’s the good turbo for the application I want “ Max Speed Trial and Drag Race” at least I can control the boost via My APEXI AVCR-R and do the Tune on My FCON Vpro ECU! The only upgrade I need to do on my engine in the future should be swap the Crankshaft and Conrods from RB25 and 4AGZE Pistons !
 
You should merge the wastegate flange instead of fitting it at 90° to the flow.

This is one I made for a m52, controls boost perfect no creep at all.

People will disagree with me on this, but I personally think that design gives too much priority to the wastegate. When closed, much of the gases will be hitting the closed diaphragm of the wg, instead of being directed smoothly to the turbine wheel. The result, reduced spool, higher pre-turbine backpressure, etc. If the wg is big enough it will do fine mounted at 90.

Let us know how you get on with boost control when your setup is up and running, DarkDrifter.

I did consider this when I first thought about doing it and others did comment too.
This is for a stock m52 so it's never going to be running at it's max, I doubt it'll cause any issues and it does control boost well.
 
Has anyone ever machined or removed this part of the exhaust housing. Pretty sure it was for the mount for the internal gate. It’s fucking ugly and I would like clearance between the cam cover so I can wrap a blanket around it as I would like lower temps around that area. As you can see from the pics I would like the metal marked in red removed so I follows the curve of the housing demonstrated by the black line. Thanks.

Edit: If you have the clearance I would clock the center of that turbo so oil exit would face straight down

Thanks I’ll have a look. The drain is pretty straight bud. But from the pics I have gave, granted it kind of looks like it’s a severe angle but the drain is good but thanks for the advice

Just had a look. So you had the EXACT same problem as I have. Also forgot to mention I welded my internal gate last year so basically now I’m guessing I can remove the material.

Yeah I thought it could be just the picture but figured Id point it out anyway :)

And yes I had exactly the same problem and often pictures are the easiest way to describe things. As you have welded the iwg shut you can remove the outer bits/bracket-thingy.

And no problem
 
Hello , for the hx35 7 blade BEP .70 housing into sr20det , what is the best camshaft for max réponse , use to hillclimb, with a lot of small tight turn, currently I have a brian crower 264/264 but we find a little laggy so I ask for advice.
 
Rather than looking at the engine, have you considered what you could do with gearing?

What diff / final drive ratio do you run?
 
actually it's a good question, on the video I was in 3.91, and I just climbed a 4.36, but not yet tested, for cons I mount a gearbox Nissan 300zx and I have 285/30/18 at the back
you think I'm going to gain pressure or lose on the first reports?
 
Hx35 in that trim could probably do 600hp+ on a SR20. What power are you running/at? Doesn’t seem to be the best turbo choice for your application if you’re only running it at 0.8 bar.
Lower duration cams and a big downpipes would spool a turbo better.
 
Hold off on any engine mods until you've tested that 4.36. It's not so much that it'll change boost, more that it'll be a lot more responsive. The engine won't have as much rolling resistance against it so will accelerate faster.

What @bigdave z20 says is 100% right. You're asking about response on an SR20 yet have fitted an HX35? An HX30 or HX27 would have been a better Holset choice for hill climbs.

The easiest thing you can do in your current situation is redo the exhaust straight off the turbo to as big as you can fit. 3.5-4" dump pipes are the number 1 thing with getting Holset's working as efficiently as possible
