The R32 Chronicles

This build tread reminds me of the good times when all the pros had their builds up.. this build is probably better then most of the pro cars back then too. Fair play to you man.

Hey man thats a real compliment. I remember the glory days of this forum where there was constant build threads. I wouldn’t say the car is better built than the cars back then. Just better specced maybe as tech and affordability have come along way since then.

That's why you get one, keep both. I've got an NRG wooden wheel that was done in candy pink with rainbow flake, that's fun for pokin a bit of sparkle, got Nardi for everything else haha.

Love this build, the car is going to be sweet when it's finished, it's finally so close! I wish I had your fabrication skills (and the balls to chop shit up). Looking forward to seeing what sort of numbers it makes.

So went to the unit on Friday. Got a few more bits done. However i ended up forgetting to take photos because i was too busy pissing about getting on. And i had to help adam swing his 25 box back in the 15 after its new clutch.

Due to the wings i have for the car having been snapped and cut up in the past. All the vital bits that mount the headlights and indicators were missing. So i quickly made some rudimental brackets to hold the headlights.

Shit photo but you can see whats what.

Then i needed a way of mounting the indicators. So i made some little brackets.
B6E0FDF6-9BA7-4D6C-8D79-C3EA364B8E23.jpeg

Again. Nothing special just a quick job. And with the help of my best mates, tek screws. We had indicators mounted. I may add a couple of little brackets on the top too because i want to make sure indicators arent going missing at like £150ish quid a pair.

Then i fucked around with some other shitty little jobs i had to do, i plumbed up the vac lines for the fpr, then with the help of an adaptor and some hoses we had in the unit and a stanley knife i butchered myself a top rad hose.

I then it was onto body panels. I trimmed the front bumper to fit the intercooler. Then i put some of the gay bungs onto the wings and front bumper to be able to mount them with a cable tie sensibly. Then i put the bare minimum rivets into the car to hold the over fender on and pinched where i need it. There is something so wrong about drilling holes in a car ive spent so long welding up. But hey ho. Once that was done i mounted up the spare rear bumper i had and the spare side skirts i had. This is really just a temporary look for the car to go to mapping and mot and be on the road, once the car works and i have done a test day to iron out the bugs i will concentrate on making the car look sick.

Please excuse the rideheight, the piss poor front wheel specs and the dirt. Our unit is dusty as fuck and a lot of these pannels have been hanging on the wall a good time. The car desperately needs a wash.

However its starting to look like and actual car. Give it another day I reckon and it will be ready to go to jack. So close.

So boys and girls ive been quiet. That sometimes means progress, that sometimes mean i want to burn the car to the ground.

I pushed the car outside to wash it. During this process very quickly realised i have a seized calliper. Brilliant. But got the car outside none the less.
DFECC032-491A-4ADC-BCEF-13FAA536CDB1.jpeg

I washed it. You know what that looks like. Incase your dumb, this is it wet.
739CB29A-EAFB-402B-A39A-609902F54723.jpeg

I then took the car back inside and took the seat out so i could clean the glass in the back and wrap the shoulder straps of the harness on the cage.

That was when i noticed a huge puddle where the back seat should be. Fucking brilliant. A bit of investigation and i realised it was running in the back window and down the seam. Now seeing as the car was being picked up the following morning to go sit outside at jacks until he had time to fit it in. This presented a problem. I had to cancel my appointment and transport. Another set back.

Closely followed by me breaking my thumb at work the next week. So that also is a fucking pain as i cant really get on with anything one handed.
AD984CA3-AF00-46BB-856D-0C5B1084B483.jpeg

Spicy.

However i got the glass removed that Friday by a professional and got to have a look at the carnage underneath.

19F2330B-67D2-4482-A97E-003C222D2E5D.jpeg

Not actually as bad as expected. What was scary was the glass sealant had totally gone off. The glass man said the only thing really holding the glass in was the rear wiper motor. So glad its come out.

Got my old man to throw a wire wheel on a grinder over the rust for me to see what i needed to do.
97545B15-E32F-4580-8E1D-57843B93BDFC.jpeg

Fortunately nothing too scary. Hopefully can weld that little hole. Treat whats left. Primer and paint it and get the glass back in.

However with one hand that may be tricky. So bare with me but hopefully I’ll be able to get some help and get this fucking thing gone to jack soon.

Fuck sakeeee!!! So close!! Get Adam to help tack that hole up etc and get it down to Jack asap - this needs to be on track sooner rather than later dude! I feel like I'm gonna be stripping mine down just as yours is ready to go :(

Change of mother fucking plan, jack is a busy as fuck guy, i missed my slot. And because of that jack cant squeeze me in for ages. So Ed has decided that we are getting the car running ourselves. So i’ve had a mass order up and we shall begin fuel pump wiring, downpipe, exhaust, screamer pipe, boost pipes and some other wiring. It will run before the year ends. Im guna try my best.

really cranked this mother up to 11 in the last few months! getting there man!

i know what you mean about same car smells. All e46s smell the same. As do ls400s, found this out when i bought my second one.

keep it up man, looking forward to the finished item.

So a little update of where we are at. Because as i sit writing this everyone is at matsuri driving the night demos, and I'm sat with the mrs watching friggin x factor.

So my thumb is still pretty fucked, but i am also sick of watching every other cunt driving and me looking at my expensive pile of parts sat in the unit. Ive missed the 4th end of year matsuri since owning this car.

So i went down and ground back a bit more of the rear window surround, welded up the hole that was there.
C0FE23A3-9D52-462B-97D4-8A20C2C31394.jpeg

The next step was to treat the whole surround with rust treatment.
6DFDEBDE-5557-49B4-BB4C-35259BF6B5FC.jpeg

Then a zinc primer.
2FEC1AC0-BAB8-4D99-BFCA-1BDA4F43D2FD.jpeg

Then i threw some black paint over it too. But forgot to photograph that. Also took the time to clean any overspray of the inside of the rear quarter windows whilst i could reach in easy.

Also took the time to mount up the harnesses on the cage.

Then i got the glass man back. Top guy, he cleaned all the overspray and shit off the glass before he fitted it for me.
18789B14-C086-404F-BE1C-047E6F6423F1.jpeg

Amazing how complete how a car looks once it has glass back in it.
2576E459-FB9D-46AB-8EC8-D47736693B42.jpeg

i also welded up the holes in the boot lid whilst i was welding the back window surround.

Then i went back to the unit the day after, rolled the door up and for the first time the unit looked like it has 2 working cars in it.
45CAC7BC-C546-4DD7-BB85-B2F9413B7614.jpeg

I threw adams wheels on the front of my car. To work out what i needed to order for my ssr’s.

AD5AF7D2-71FC-4290-9DAD-6EACE38C59D7.jpeg

They fitted really well.
420BACA2-E742-428B-B0D2-68EA6D776A8C.jpeg

After all the years of slagging people for shit fitment, even with the car looking like shit from a paint point of view when i first test the car, because paint is the last job on my list, i need to have good fitment. So based off these vskf’s I ordered up a pair of 4.5” lips for my ssr’s.

Onto a job I absolutely fucking hate. Wiring, the reason i hate it is because i do not understand it hahaha. So this has proven tricky. However i quickly figured out i was missing a few key relays. So i popped to a mates and pulled them out of a spare s13 he has.
D62B4534-4328-49A4-9CE6-9FADC94250FB.jpeg

Then with the help of a quick call from Jack at J’a garage i set to work figuring out why i had no power anywhere. Then he told me i was missing my main power wire to the fusebox. i connected that up and we got this.

And most importantly the infamous skyline rings
7465725A-9AE3-43B6-901B-6FE67F328F43.jpeg

However still no cranking or ignition.

So that lead me to a minefield, a lot of tracing wiring left right an centre. And no obvious issue. The multimeter i was using from just before the war and was analog. so a trip to tool station to buy a more up to date multimeter and we were away. Onto continuity testing. Everything was sweet. Still no answer. Everything was as it should be. Just no power. All came down to this cunt.
E1295194-B8ED-4F87-BB46-B6769CA81432.jpeg

looked fine visually. Didnt look broken. Put a continuity tester on it. Nothing. Chucked a new one in. And got this.

hopefully that link works. If not, it cranked.

I took the turbo housing to work. Tigged on a tight radius ali elbow.

So thats where im up too. I have everything to start making the downpipe and exhaust, so thats the next project i think. I also have everything here to finish the wiring. So i think im wiring up fuel pumps and the defi’s so i know whats going on. Away from the car firing, i am going to wait however until i have an exhaust on the car before i start it, because when it starts i want to run it up to temperature.

Also whilst im here. I just want to take a second to appreciate Ed’s “drift wheels”’ he has just built.

18x12.5 weds cerb’s. Sexual.

So yeah. Thats where i am up too. Thanks for reading. Hopefully I’ll have this bitch running soon.

So its been a minute. Partially because im a slacker. Partially because ive been waiting for a few key things to happen.

So there is a list of jobs that need doing to finish the car. One job ive been putting off for a hell of a long time is properly fitting the bonnet. Ive had the bonnet like 2 and a half years but haven’t been able to bring myself to take a grinder too it to make it fit. The bonnet if you dont know is a genuine dmax bonnet. Something I wanted desperately for the car when i started. It took a while to find and wasn’t cheap. So the idea of making holes in it is somewhat scary. Especially when you have to chop a lot of the underside of it out even just to clear the Slam pannel, which when your paying £450ish for a bonnet I wouldn’t of expected i needed to do to actually fit the car.

So we started by roughing out what we thought was hitting.
9E3C0A0C-C82C-4FFD-8510-60867539A167.jpeg

Which turned out to be a little cautious. It actually required even more out. But we will get to that.

Eventually we got it to actually drop down over the slam panel and fit the car it was designed to fit.
C7A3DD5A-7B86-4B68-8C13-B0F48D64E47F.jpeg

onto the next petrifying job. Aero catches. Fuck me. Took ages to get them marked up somewhere i was happy. But then we did and i made a hole.
536F2489-2AAA-4514-B7E1-9B82662664F1.jpeg

Made them fit lovely. Then forgot to take a picture with them fitted. However this is how much i had to cut out to get the bonnet to fit the car it was designed for. Even had to clearance it for the rad cap. Pain in the arse.
D93F83DC-0022-45DE-B785-DB585ED4B378.jpeg

Anyway. Onto the next saga. Downpipe, not a lot to say. It was a long job because i wanted it as tight to the car as possible. So started from the top and worked back.
56BD862A-C364-4A91-92D6-18B9F544E25B.jpeg

Of course i wasnt doing this alone. The main man Ed was in house.
AF5228F1-9D38-4985-ACF4-F8003104F812.jpeg

This was how much room we had to land the downpipe. Still needed to send a screamer pipe through there too.
661B7F05-947F-4B03-B38B-6B6A228684EC.jpeg

then we got lost im a world of maths and pie cuts to get it tight to the car and i forgot to take anymore photos. So fast forward to me at work the following week and i set to work welding it.
AE1585DC-EDA5-4E5D-9DF6-15DF142606EE.jpeg

The results were average at best. Im pretty disappointed with the welding. Been having some issues with my welder at work lately.

So it came out ok. But far from looks like a professional welder welded it.

So i took it back to the car. Threw it on and tacked a vband flange on the existing system that came with the car. I will build a full system later. But this will do for now. However i will probably chuck a box in it later.
65EE6559-1735-415A-9195-15DA752BBC15.jpeg

i then took that to work and welded the flange.
9B32DDFC-124E-41BA-A2EC-93EBA811ED52.jpeg

Then i chucked that on the car with all new rubbers.

Now it looks kinda cool. But the tips are too small and stick out too far. So i am going to fix that with this.
AD1739E7-1E7F-4688-8541-55B410059012.jpeg

Will be going to 3” shotgun tips. Looks way better. Also will add a box to the system at some point because I suspect it may be a touch loud haha.

Onto one of the most fun things ive done for a moment.
13C03AB0-A728-471F-B77E-53C73F8DF32B.jpeg

i got a box from America
5CE0FE81-A3AE-4E90-A6CA-D5D98E18354C.jpeg

It contained some spice.

so that was the next job. First things first. I needed the tyres off. I have no tyre machine. No worries for a man of my grinder skills

FE10B2C0-85BC-4E40-A9C6-EBF5C65F6C83.jpeg

Soon fucked that off. Then stripped all the bolts off holding the face.

Which all came out lovely.

pulled the face out.

then time to take a grinder to my wheels. Scary.

Then i was left with this.

And a pile of scrap.
A343F393-066A-4EB9-AB5A-FFA4507BF012.jpeg

Then a bit of cleaning and tidying. And i was left with a barrel.

Then the fun bit. They originally looked like this.

and now they look like this.

They look fucking sick and most importantly. I got doggo approval.
D5A5496D-1862-40DF-80C5-5D13D87D5357.jpeg

Real pleased with how they look. Going to make awesome fronts. Tyres are on their way as is some sealer to seal the wheels up. The next job on the car is the start of bodywork and boostpipes. Once the boostpipes are done. Im about an hours worth of wiring away from firing it up. Hopefully it will run before the end of the year. Cheers for reading guys.

Progress!!!! Bonnet pins are a PITA!! I did the exact same, but on a METAL bonnet, so much more hassle and way harder to cut neatly lol

PS, take a scotch pad to the exhaust system and make it shiny all the way through the car, dirt doesn't stick to it as much and it looks clean - did it before fitting mine last year and its still alright even with a few of my offs, will do it again over winter before I refit it to mine!

New wheels look sickk
