Welding an open diff for S13

Mitch

Hi blokes

I'm under the impression I REALLY need a decent LSD, but am not sure which one to get-Maybe James's idea is a winner. Anyway, while I'm looking/saving, I'm thinking of welding up a standard open one and seeing how I get on. Does anyone have any info on exactly which bits need welding and if it is worth doing before I source an LSD? I'm thinking of getting one off SXOC for next to nowt, as no-one wants them (I threw my old one away  )

Cheers

Mitch

You know you said about if Ive got any bits to swap for those wheels? Ive got an S13 open diff sitting in my pile of s13 parts.:D Its got an S14 back cover on it but you can just use your one on it.

Interested?

Anyway, proper clutch diffs are the way to go, they will make a difference but I'm not convinced that I'm at the ability to really need one yet. I want to learn how to drift my car as it is without spending more cash.

Everytime I think I need to buy something expensively drifty I remind myself of Julian in the stock R34 and Midgers in his stock suspensioned S14.
When (or if more like  ) I improve my drifting so I feel that I cant do much more in my car will be when I'll get a diff and coilovers.

Cheers for the offer, mate, but I think I'll go the cash route for the wheels :D

I know what you're saying about people doing it with stock kit, but they're a lot more talented than me.

Also, I know some who have waited ages before they got an uprated diff, and wish they'd bought one sooner. Now that you're mixing it with the big boys at Silverstone, I think you'll be after one soon

I want to improve NOW, as I'm a bit of an old fucker and need every scrap of help I can get! :D

You still on for tomorrow @ The Robin Hood?

Yeah mate, I'll be there.

Didnt mean a straight swap for the wheels mate. Feck it, you can just have it if you want. Let me know and I'll bung it in the boot.

Old fecker? Youre younger than me arent you?

Nice one Steve, I'll see you there

If you're feeling kind mate, I'll have it, and I can strip it down and see which bits need welding, that'd be excellent.

I think I am older than you, dude  :D

Mitch, the spider gears need welding to each other (the 3 gears all connected to each other) and then they need welding to the carrier that they sit in.

Just make sure you get it properly welded in an OTT fashion, if it's just tacked it'll snap in five seconds of driving. I hadn't realised quite how much strain it puts on it when parking etc..at least in my big car it does anyway!

Oh and clean it out THOROUGHLY when you're done, you don't want any bits of weld floating around inside the diff...

Cheers Ben.

What components does it put all the strain on? It might be a false economy putting a cheap diff on if it wrecks everything else on my rear end (fnarr  ):D

Basically the CV joints, the diff & diff bearings themselves (this is more the issue, you don't really want the welds to break).

Just think of what would be stressed if you tried to force each wheel to turn in opposite directions with a locked diff, there's nothing really expensive (from a breaker anyway) that you'll break. And for drifty goodness it's worth it, it won't be as good in the drift without an expensive high locking diff. It's also pretty bloody good to drive anyway, traction everywhere, it rocks. If you get the launch right even my crappy slow car flings itself into the limiter in first whereas before it would spin up one wheel, so much traction.

i've been thinking about this,

i'd like to see it done and the results first,

unless i can do it for nout!

open diffs are gay!

I reckon you can do it for next to nowt if you get a diff and weld it up. As long as you do the removal and refitting yourself, it shouldn't cost much. The only problem is they are a bit of an unknown quantity for me. I think I might try it as an interim mod while I get something better sorted.

Steve, can I be cheeky and ask for the bolts too if you have them, as the S14 ones are different. I'll bring you a couple of Grip Video DVD's for your trouble and generosity  :D

Cheers mate

I take it you have an S14 diff on yours then?

No probs, I'll have a look tomorrow.

if you have a s14 dif why you thinking about welded a open diff closed?

are they crap?

Cheers Steve

No Rob, they aren't crap, but I want a diff that'll lock up better, and before I spend a load on one, I thought I'd try the welded up route first.

It'll also give me a diff to use on the car while the other one is off, so I'm not off the road.

Apart from James' £400 one, does anyone have any prices/suggestions for the diff to get?

Cheers.

The standard S14 VLSD is a huge improvement over not having an LSD at all, but for proper drifting they simply don't compare to a mechanical LSD or the hugely uprated viscous units we've had made. They really are worlds apart

I've got an S14 diff lying around, its the diff only, its the one removed from my car so there is no final drive gear on it. Its up for grabs if anyone wants it.

I should say its free for grabs!
