Anyone think formula-d is wank?

Right this is meant for discussion, not to troll. I should also add I am pretty shite at skidding, before anyone says "i doubt you could do better".

I was watching the Formula drift at Atlanta the other night, and ignoring the shit streaming, I felt underwelmed. I was expecting to see some corolla's, FD's, S bodys, mx5's and maybe some skylines.

All i saw was a few different chassis, with 1000hp v8's or maybe a JZ if it was exotic. And the drifting consisted of safe entries, handbrake, shit loads of power and smoke. then transition somewhere on the track. It left me feeling like, could they do it in a light underpowered chassis? Overall I was underwhelmed and thought it was abit shit.

Expand and discuss.

Wet conditions wouldn't have helped the slow safe entries

Wanna see mx5's, and alike.. Go to Lydden hill practice day

Wanna see done cool jdm cars doing a skid.. Pop onto YouTube and search d1gp.. Plenty of s-bodies, corollas in there

I loved it.
You can really see how the drivers differ in atlanta and its always interesting to see the different lines.
It was actually one of very few events where ive been able to see the lead cars taking tricky lines that the chase cars struggle to follow and just generally trying to fuck the chase car up which is what it's all about for me.

I agree that it's a shame you don't see a lot of old jap metal these days but FD isn't really typical drifting now is it. Its all about the best skid cars in terms of performance and not looking cool on the internet.

Agree with the entries, a few drivers are good with them, others play it safe. Imo the entries should be more heavily weighted but I guess people would rather see proximity over entries. Atlanta is particularly bad for this anyway.

Jaw dropped at this point

I watched top 32 and fell asleep. Just wasn't excited by it. It's a power race. And it kept annoying me that barely anyone was hitting te clips in around te horseshoe. They were just comming close but nobody pushed to the clips. Idc and bdc are one million times a better series.

It's a natural progression, alot of the FD guys are awesome drifters and regularly mess about in lower power missile cars

I used to kinda hate it but it's growing on me, is a spectator sport and some will shun that, fair enough I see your point but 1000 bhp cars going balls out is kinda badass in my opinion

Also the community aspect with the drivers, teams, fans ect is amazing, somethink the UK scene could do with, so much hate and preconceptions that I don't think will ever change but that's what drives me

That's my view on it, wasn't my original view and I nag change my mind again haha

I'd like it to be properly proffesionally produced and aired on a better medium than dailymotion..

But as far as the actual competition goes, I love it.. 1000hp cars, and newer cars.. I think the new cars give it a better appearance, I don't like ragged out old missiles, looks pikey..

This standard of cars are what my target is for mine, 800hp in a properly built race car..

It's all about image..

And Aasbo's overtake was truely sick..

I don't know what people are watching, as FD has rotaries, JZs, BMW engines, couple of different 4cyls, loads of turbo engines and shit, and a fuck sight better driving and styling than what we get in the UK

Gaz has never competed in Formula D. Mike has. Interestingly Mike has never won his home series.

Formula D has its place, it will push boundaries in every aspect. The money and demand is there to push it faster/closer/riskier.

We're seeing the V8 theme in NZ growing, and up until recently only had one 4 cyl left at top level, now that person is going 2J after repeated engine and gearbox failures. We've also dropped the speed element of judging in an attempt to reduce the necessity of semi slick tyres, yet pulling a gap (or not) is still make or break.

It's exciting but the power game is getting a bit ridiculous.
I'd be curious to see the same guys drifting in a tournament with a bhp cap of say around 400-500, just to see if there would be any differences in ranking

Massive power does have its downsides too.. Daigo dropped out in top 16 battles due to engine failure..

But fuck it, if you got budget, why wouldn't you have mental power?!?
If they were going out and not using loads of power then it'd be pointless.. But they do use it..

I also think you can see different styles from round the world, Robbie Nishida for example, his style is very much D1 Japan, mega speed but less angle and less smoke.. He really doesn't use all the 900hp he's got.. FD wants a different style, ie big angle & mental smokes..
He did do well last round though so well done to Robbie:thumbs:

Not after he went out in the top 32 at the last round. He broke both cars during the weekend.

Yeah was up there watching that weekend.

The v8 cars were bloody impressive, so much faster than the others. But were less entertaining than the turbo 6's to watch, the noise of the 8's is pretty boring compared to a turbo on pipe

"Sideways drag racing" - will never leave my head when people talk about FD.

I like the technical aspect of it (from a car perspective), the level of prep on these cars is incredible - granted the sponsors have put the money into it.

But I wish more people would cover D1GP, Motors TV did for a while but at OBSCENE times in the morning. Granted, there is a lot of work in broadcasting them with English subs, but give it it's due...

The technical DRIVING aspect of D1GP is far better and doesn't have the "sold my soul to sponsors" feeling that FD has - probably because they don't have to be in your face about how they turn their can to the camera for their post run drink...

Not watched anything this season but Ive always enjoyed seeing the difference in style between the Japs, the Yanks and the Euros - watching Dai against someone like Faust or Forsberg is always good to watch :)

Its not as good as D1 IMO but its still better than the European series to watch :)
