CA18DET preservation society

Never had one in any of my engines and its not been a problem. They come with some baffling anyway unlike SR20s which have none at all. Chortle.:)

my s13 drift car is currently running a jdm ca18det and my 180sx runs a straight cam sr however for drifting i think the ca18det is a better engine as it doesn't use rocker arms! Ive currently got the engine out the car to clean all the breather system out including the strainers in the cam covers. I would love a baffled sump for mine also if anyone knows where to get one? I would love some more info on how to modify the crankcase system steve if you have any?

Liking the idea of this thread I quite like the old ca and the fact people hate them kind of makes me like them more!! Long live the ca!!

CA's are awesome if you treat them right, and as a lot of SR owners are finding now they are of a similar age to when CA's where know to be rubbish.

My last one lasted 4.5 years of nothing but drifting abuse and driving to and from events. and it died because of a mapping cock up and a head gasket going, still made 275bhp with a snapped ring though :wack:

my current engine is making 300ish and is awesome. I'm running a koyo rad and mocal thermostatic sandwich plate with a 19 row oil cooler, spa design gauges plumed in to key places. I've also got a twin catch tank setup, one going to the inlet rocker cover and one going to the exhasut rocker with the run to the trunk blocked off, still has the standard metal bendy pipe but all cleaned out and it gets regular oil changes. she's a lover.

this is the only picture I can find that has a fairly recent snap of the engine bay.

i have to agree with that if you think most ca's have had a second set of bearings so now there out living some sr's there at that age i agree...:wack:

Any pictures of breather setups?

I did read a massive thread on sxoc but there was so many different opinions I just opted to keep the standard setup.

A simple breather mod I did with mine was to block off the PCV valve, join the intake to the exhaust breather and then take another pipe off that one to a catch tank. Worked just fine, collected plenty of crap but if anything it ended up filling too quickly, especially if doing prolonged 3rd gear drifts. I guess because the engine was working harder than in 2nd.

My breather setup, using a cossie catch can from rally design which vents to atmosphere via a pipe under the car (i clipped the atomsphere pipe down by the exhaust so its under the car saving the mess) block pcv valve off, go from crank to inlet manifold via a T, The T goes to catch can, then from the front inlet breather to the exhaust across the top of the engine, then from the exhaust breather to the 2nd fitting on the catch can......simples...
The catch is mounted where the abs used to be

Fair enough, keep the info coming guys :)

Heard about people modifying oil galleries is this necessary?

anything that helps the oil return easier is worth doing, I wouldnt pull your engine apart just to do it though, but if your rebuilding your bottom end why not heres what i did with a £30 dremel......

As for baffled sumps there not avaiable to buy off the shelf you have to make it yourself and as someone already said they do come with some baffles any way and for the effort you have to put in i couldnt see the benifits.

The only reason people say a ca is shit is because they are old and tend not to be well maintained. Now we see many sr's blowing up, because they are now old etc lol.

I prefer the ca over an sr, ok so I blew the ca up bigtime and the sr lived (just)

But it felt a much more aggressive engine, not as fast top end but just more fun.

I now have another s13 so will be thankful for the above posts when it comes to spanner time soon :)

I'm such a ca whore... any chance I get I love to big mine up.

Granted it hasn't been used much this year, but since its been built all I have done is bounce it off the limiter in the BDC. We have now converted to run on ethanol and its only going to get better. Here is a pik of her:-

and the current power figures (not fully mapped yet) with stock rods and pistons:-

the catch can setup you have there is the same as mine which is handy :smokin: silly question were did you get the silicone piping you used and whats the diameter ? looks very clean there!

timmi i like your style man ca's are for winners there such an agressive engine i think compared to some which can be quite a lazy power delivery

john_smith have you got a pic were you can see more of the engine dude, whats the specs of the engine turbo ect?

cams would people bother had a butchers online earlier frsport America tomei poncams £306 delivered ? personally right now mines about 310bhp and i thinks thats more than enough,is it worth it money wise and effort i see the benefits but not the hassle and such ??

turbo manifolds what we recommending Ive got a ebay spesh shes old now though she lives on but mates turbo fell of not long ago his was the version 1 :wack:

anyone doing anything crazy top mounts i dont see the point ? but people harp on about it....

also anyone want to donate a fan shroud have twin fans and a viscous but no shroud so im probably cooling my bonnet and the floor :wack:

This threads a bit of a winner so far getting some good info up here, to many people are giving up on ca's and whacking sr's in killing them trying a rb25 there wont be any decent engines left with that attitude, its the same with s13 re-shell quickly followed by breaking and two shells to the scraper

also of this twin catch can set up from rad_s13 can you get some more pics up dude car looks rad mate :)

I'll take some tonight, its pretty simple though, the inlet breather goes to the driverside catch tank and vents through a filter. the exhaust side rocker cover has one blanked off and the other going to a drivers side catch tank which is where the abs used to be and vents through a filter.

For manifolds, you want a Frenchweapon one. A guy on SXOC made a batch of them out of mild steel, widely accepted as one of the best CA manifolds. Problem is, they are extremely rare. I had one and it was brilliant.

And they still crack badly, there ok on a quick car but still no good for a drift car.

I've got myself a rare HKS cast top mount manifold that I will be modding to work with a gt2871r with a conversion exhaust housing and exsternal wastegate at some point this year.
