Keeve's Lowstyle S13

Home for Christmas, thought fuck it I'll take it down the road for one last session.

First time driving on the 17's first thing I noticed was how much heavier and responsive the steering was with normal driving, but that might have been down to reducing the camber before this drift day. Got to Perth and started driving down the M90. Got to a particular part in the road where the bumps were bad and the S13 was all over the place. I remember reading up about S13's having savage bump steer so thought that the 17's just made them worse. Spoke to my mate who was behind in an mx5 and he said he was getting bump steer too. Just kept going.

Got to Driftland, first run, kick the clutch slide down into the esses, feeling good, go to steer round the esses, Nothing. Car just bounced along straight FUCK. Hazards on about to retire to the pits until I realised that Its most likely down to the tyres on the front being cold/not been used since coming from Japan. Gave it a bit of a wiggle up the straight, all good no knocking, clonks, any bad shit so decided to just drive a bit differently and abuse the fuck out of the clutch and handbrake. Managed to get round albeit on shite lines and dragging my arse everywhere.

Drop the pressure in the front tyres down to 20psi. Made it a bit bearable but I still had to drive a bit more cautious and not really how I drive at all shame cause it was my favourite layout and with it being a bit greasy made it really easy/fun. Anyway, Pictures and a video i uploaded to facebook. (which should be viewable)

Thanks to Connor and Mr V9 for braving the shite weather!

New extension to Driftland is an absolute belter. Very hard to be able to tripod on it but even still it opens up wider, faster lines into that bottom corner which at first I thought was a bit shit because it cheapens being able to link into that bottom corner but its really fun. I'm a fan.

Driving home this happened.

Driving along, bump steer returned, literally felt like someone grabbed the steering wheel and threw me into the centre of the road. Hit the brakes and slowed right down to 50 and happened again. Limped off the first junction I could. Got it jacked up and found the DW Rack spacer on the drivers side had come loose for the 2nd time in less than a year. After an hour of trying to bodge up something 14mm to tighten the nut I find the tool that i had used for it in the first place, dropped it down and went to turn my headlights on... Nothing. Traced wires for the HID kit for ages, kept finding stuff that had gone wrong but couldn't get the headlights on so had to limp up to the next services to get some standard bulbs.

Well theres my first 3 problems out the way with the 13. I've got a modded subframe from Millermods to fit. RSR's have been delivered and new decent bulbs on order. If i get all this shit fixed in time I might give Driftland another run on the 27th. If the snow holds off I might even take it out of 4x4 mode and get the wiring loom moved. Looks shite just now.

Who's mx5 that look sick? And this is really making me want to get an s13. What it like on fuel and tyres?
That's Billy's one.

Tyres seem to wear like any other drift car, fuel is alright provided you don't put the cap on squint and piss fuel all over the track...eh Keeve?

You may find some rust issues!

Haha fuck off.
Fuel aint so bad but I'm only running low boost. when I crank it up to 15psi again I think it'll use more. Tyres, I managed 3 drift days out of some brand new tyres, 0 degrees camber on it though so they wear even and I wasn't constant on drift cause i'm only just getting used to the car.

Aye so the car was looking a bit ridiculous (for me anyway) at this height on the Ray's so I did another arch loom tuck to be the end of the rubbing issues.

Done this to my coilovers so I can actually get the fronts relatively low. (LCA and Castor arms are removed in this pic)

Results:

No as low as I wanted but it will do until I do some tubbing of the arches and shorter springs.
Had to raise the exhaust up a bit and whilst I was doing so found some loose bolts at the turbo mani, assuming this is from solid mounts so considering going to Poly's.

Also got time to fit my modified subframe, which I really should have taken a picture of... Kazama Tie rod ends and Tien Tie rods were fitted also and I have just bought some Superclarkey S14 knuckles from a mate.
Gonna keep an eye out for a Cusco cage, but pretty much just needs paint and I'll be finished with it until I decide to get it lower. Been thinking Flame Red/AJ4 for the car, but not sure if it will suit the pignose/black roof.

I noticed your based in Inverness, well the car is.

Do either you or your friend weld for money? The guy who was due to weld my e30 up got a full time job.

Nah mate I wouldn't take on anything don't really have the time for it. My mate still has a stack of other projects to get through as well.
Best bet is to pick up a welder and learn to do it yourself. I hadn't welded at all until I got stuck in with this.

Was meant to get another skid day in on the 3rd but couldn't get down. Made a wee compilation video from 2015 in the S13 and mx5. Just threw together a handful of my favourite clips.

Awaiting knuckles and Alignment then have a private day booked to test before Street Legal.

What did you do to your rear coileys to get them lower? Ive got the same ones as you, wound all the way down but still looks too high.

Just wound the cup all the way up mate. If you've done that and they're still not low enough and you run no pre-load you can wind down the spring seats, thats what I did on my mx5. I compensated by stiffening the rear shocks a bit but was always conscious about bottoming out the shock.

Just saw you at dores road tesco, suspension looks stiff as you bounced slightly in the car park haha. I was in the Range Rover parked up

Aye I had a Driftland day on Friday so was just giving it a wee run to be sure it was all good after the work I'd done to it.

So flew back from London on Monday night, Tuesday I had to go get a few things to pick up before I fit my extended LCA's and Superstyle Knuckles.

Started the car up after a month of being sat in winter absolutely no grief. Threw up the Gazebo as it was meant to be pissing rain over the next few days.

Take it out on a run to find some bolts for my LCA's, spent ages looking for M14's since M12's were too small, finally find some and of course they turned out to be M12's which I could have got the first fucking place I went. My old dear sends us a text "How long will you be? The Gazebo is falling down." - Start blasting home to try and save the gazebo from the wind. Car dies on me, in the pissing rain and I have no tools, jacket or anything. Turned out to be the battery went flat after turning on my headlights. Got a jump off my mums fabia and absolutely flew home as fast as I could to be sure it didn't die again.

Good start to my week off...

Sourced an alternator locally (about 40 miles away locally...) fired that in and fixed the battery drain.

Got to work on the Superstyle Knuckles and LCA's. Problem: Tie rods were too short, and had been cut down. Had to re-fit some offset rack spacers backwards to be able to drive the car as a mate in Edinburgh was going to bring some Tie rods to drifltland on Friday.

This made the car handle like ass. Car wouldn't go onto full lock and just generally the steering was horrific but everything went together sound.

Next up was my SuperNow solid gearbox mount. Easy enough job but I couldn't figure out how the gearbox bolts were too short. Whack with a hammer and i found out they were studs.

Car sounds mental with this hearing the gearbox noise through the cabin.

Had to throw skid wheels with my 25mm spacers onto the front to clear the brakes and suspension, the 10mm slip on spacers wouldn't fit with standard sized nuts and was needing to pick up 15mm spacers from my mate on Friday also.

Forecast was to rain all day at Driftland so went down a night early, grabbed the tie rods so that I don't need to do them in the morning in a wet Driftland Pit. Enter midnight Tesco carpark alignments.

All sorted apart from fitting the 15mm spacers and the Ray's back onto the front.

Showed up, Swapped wheels over, Stressed about a last minute pull out from someone. Power of Facebook and Shands extensive drifty mates got someone in within the hour to fill the space. Beasy showed up with his camera briefly as he had stuff to pick up and got a few pictures.
Running Full outer clockwise to start with. I was trying to initiate earlier and earlier but decided to change layouts as we had a couple people who were learning and it was getting a bit hairy with no marshall's on the track hire.

Switched layout to the infield, which is one of my favourite layouts but was struggling with front end grip so had to drag arse initiating off the wall which made me feel very BMW'y and ill.

We weren't sure if we wanted to run infield reverse, or shiftlock reverse next, took a vote and decided on shiftlock reverse. After 4 days running shiftlock in the Mx5 and then stacking it heavy on Shiftlock reverse for the cliphunters day I'm not the biggest shiftlock fan but once I got out and driving it it was easily my favourite layout of the day.

Kept pushing the corner off the wall faster and faster. One of the times I threw it in 'a bit too fast' and I had no chance of slowing down or getting grip. Queue my hillclimb attempt.

Fuck it if you're no pushing the limits you should take up Golf or summit.

Was only like 10 minutes left of track time and the car was absolutely covered with stones and mud so thought I'd just leave it and not fuck the last 10 minutes for folk.

Went for a wee bit of food with the boys since we finished early.

Next up, Tub the front arches. Decided not to bother after reading various people say they are for show and a good hammering will sort any clearance issues. managed to chew up my front tyres from rubbing on the top of the chassis rails, so more going to be cutting that section out to give more clearance for how low it sits.
Either going to try my hand at welding my exhaust higher or put it somewhere for a custom high as fuck oval one. - Any Scottish guys have recommendations?

Need to re-locate the Passenger loom also as it was pulled in through the arch but wore through it also and lost window wipers for the whole day.

GoPro footage soon but since the seat time was unreal theres a shit tonne of footage. If anyone wants to drive Driftland from down south I can't recommend a private day enough!

Good shit dude, be interested to see how cutting the chassis rail in the arch goes as I expect I'll have todo that on mine too!

Took a clip from each layout til I can upload the rest of the highlights on decent internet.

Forgot to say, the Superstyle Knuckles have transformed the car and made it way more aggressive. Steerings a bit heavier but thats a given when shortening the leverage on the hubs. Faster steering which has it way more responsive and being able to push out on bigger angle was good too. Only downside is I felt lazy with all that extra lock to save me and would push the back end out just cause i knew i had the lock to stop a spin.
