RB20 Coilpacks

ok, fitted the entire kit...

DSC00123.JPG

But I do have sort of a problem now...

It's running on 4 cilinders, no.4 and no.6 are out !!!
Switching the sparkplug wires between 4 and 3 didn't fix anything (same with 6 and 1), and switching the sparkplugs themselves between no.5 and no.6 didn't fix anything either !
Still the same cilinders not working (engine was fine before).

BUT, If I disconnect the sparkplug wires, I can hear the spark jump the gap when the wire is close to the sparkplug, So I know the sparks are 100% across all the cilinders...

But still no go from no.4 and no.6 ...

Any ideas ? :)

will check the firing sequence tomorrow...
I think something has gone wrong with joining the wires (somehow)...
I DID connect the 2 wires on the outside, both wires on the inside, and the other 2 that were left...

look what I found here :

Skylines Downunder Discussion Forums - firing order for RB25DET

EXACTLY the same problem as me, halfway down the page...

Ok , I got the turbo back in the car on wednessday, wired up the coil as instructed 1-6, 2-5, 3-4. And it dropped cylinders 4 and 6 again (same as pre blown turbo) swapped them over so running 1-4, 2-5, 3-6 and its working (not 100%, but its working.
Im at a loss for what to do, I may have to drop into Nissan and do a consult diagnostic to see what the F**K is goin on with the car.

I got a headache hahahaha

exactly what it's doing on mine, dropping no.4 and no.6 !

guys guys, you have declared that the s1 ignighter dosnt work, thanks for that, ill mention this on web for future use, i assure u the others do, simply wire one of them in replacing the unuseable one (you will need the 2 plugs iswell), they are on a number of rb engines and cost around $40-60 keep me posted

So it SEEMS my ignitor doesn't work ?

can you supply me an RB20 ignitor ?
found some more info :)
Will a z32 ignitor work ?

Ok, fixed it.

The instructions for my engine were DEFINATELY NOT RIGHT.

see proof below :)

The kit didn't work for me, So I was going to build it back to coilpacks. I had to solder my 6pin plug back to the coilpack loom. I took the no1. wire and soldered it to the pin, no problem, was the pin on 1 side. Next, I took the no.6 wire from the coilpack loom (the short one below in the pic) and, as logic dictates, should be connected on the other free side on the 6pin plug! But this wire was a different color !

I checked the plug itself, and found out that the no.6 cilinder is actually pin number 4 on the plug !!!!!!!

So it seems the 6pin plug isn't exactly in line with the 6 cilinders...

On my plug, I had to join wire 1 and 4 , wire 2 and 5 and wire 3 and 6. Wow, while typing this, this also seems a very logical sequence :) So that's the reason why no.4 and no.6 weren't working :)

So please update the info accordingly, to help other rb25 owners :thumbs: :thumbs: :thumbs:

Hey WJ,
sorry, just seen this :rolleyes: It does seem very strange that Nissan would do this for this one particular model, but yes, I'm sure you're right with what you've found.

Are you able to confirm which cylinders you have for the following wire colours? On my car (RB25 SII using an RB20 ignitor pack and coil loom) I got
cyl1 = Black with Pink stripe
cyl2 = Pink with Yellow Stripe
cyl3 = Pink
cyl4 = Pink with Blue Stripe
cyl5 = Pink with White Stripe
cyl6 = Pink with light Green Stripe

From your description and what I can make out of the colours of the wires in that pic compared to my wire colours, on your series1 RB25DET plug you have
pin1 = cyl1
pin2 = cyl2
pin3 = cyl3
pin4 = cyl6
pin5 = cyl5
pin6 = cyl4

That is exactly what I have. Looks strange, but when paired, (1-4, 2-5, 3-6) it sort of makes sense :)

Will check wire colors tomorrow.

any chance there is something like this for us running SR20DET? I heard you talked about it but havent got any real feedback? Neither did i get any feedback on my question about those lower front control arms you had on your stand at the Auto sport show. The adjustable once?

could you get back to me on both please`?

Thanks

Jacob

Hi Jacob,
sorry for the delay in getting back to you :o

I'm working on getting some 4 cylinder coils for testing, but don't have any samples yet. Hopefully it won't be too long now.

The adjustable front lower arms will be £270 inc vat for a pair and after successful testing, we have just placed an order for these for stock along with our new rear lower pillowball arms :smokin:

I'm having a problem with mine. :(

It's holding back loads on very light throttle, once you put the foot down a bit more it clears but it's right there when you are at cruising speed and it's hugely annoying.

I swapped my coilpacks back in and it doesn't happen with them.

Any ideas?

What plugs are you running Dave and at what gaps?

Sounds cool about the adjustable arms, when can we expect to see them in the shop?

Regarding the 4 cyl. coilpack.. Are you close to getting any or is it a long shot still.. Maybe you could work out a way to use the RB coilpacks on 4 cyl. SR20DET engine´s ? Just an idear, im sure some values about "charge/dwelltime" or what is called shall be the same.. But in theori couldnt you just use the 4 outputs?:o

looking in these pics there is an ignitor (close up in middle pic ) i have a rb25det series 1 gts and i cant seem to see it :confused: where are they fitted by nissan ? do you need one of these to fit the:dw: kit ?? will this kit fit my car or do i need some other bits and bobs :rolleyes:

I'm running new NGK BCPR7ES coppers while I wait for some IQ24's to arrive. They're gapped to 0.8mm

It also does a strange thing whilst it's warming up. At idle, when you touch the throttle the tiniest bit it coughs and drops about 50rpm, it catches itself and revs up fine then though, only does it from no throttle at idle though, weird:smash:

normally it is mounted to the plate that covers the coilpacks, close to the firewall...
