SR Gearbox Solution ??

superclarkey

DORITECH MOTORSPORT
I keep thinking about it, there must be a solution for SR's for big power.

There isn't a Nissan Gearbox that can take it, end of.

So what other boxes are out there that could be had cheap that would be worth having a bellhousing made up for that could be modified to fit ?

There has to be something....

some ideas needed :):smokin:

(do not even surgest an RB25 gearbox)

Has anyone ever tried Cryogenic freezing on the gears on the SR Box?
A guy i know here was saying alot of guys with the high horsepower GTR's all over 600hp where now freezing the gears and was working a treat, it has become alot cheaper and available now F1/Rally use and makes the gears up to 4 times stronger!!!

The Getrag 6 speed which is used in GTRs and Supras take 800bhp in the Toyotas, the only reason they pop around the 650-700 mark on GTRs is the torque build up from 4wd.

I doubt any SR's will worry that, its just the usual case of them being expensive and most drifters not want to spend the money.

The same is true of alot of GTR owners in that they will happily pay for a GT42 to get 800bhp with several thousand pounds worth of fuel and mapping to go with it, but they start to cough at 7-10k for a Hollinger or Giken sequential !!!

I had rods cryo treated in my GTR before I went up to HKS forged.

Cant say whether it was any stronger or not though.

My Z32 box was shot peened and rebuilt by GBH and I have a feeling they used different bearings from standard to give it more strength. On the few time its worked 400+ hasnt worried it yet, and next year it will have to stand up to 600 so who knows !!

i think Phil had a PPG box or gear set on the DW S14a, but nor shure on that.

BMW boxes arent that strong i think, only the M boxes, and they are too expensive to make them fit on the sr20 imo.

Eh, clarkey, why no rb25 boxes ? Not getting at you or anything, just wondered what's wrong with them ?

Cryogenic freezing - Speak to Carter (SteveCarter), I believe that he had this done on his humble CA a while back, theres a place up in Cambridge that does it actually

Steve, fill us in on the costs, if I remember reading it wasnt that much either ;)

It does work though, i know a few bods who've done it and things have lasted a little longer, Rods, Blocks, gearsets, all sorts really

I read a feature on cryogenic freezing in banzai, a guy was using his pulsar gti-r for drag and was destroying boxes left right and centre. He had his gear set treated and at that time it had lasted him a whole season without letting go. Well worth a shot before looking for a different box i think.

Are they using liquid nitrogen or liquid helium? Used to use both at my old place and the costs aint too bad for nitrogen, just need to make a vessel from stainless.

Are Z32 boxes the same as any other Nissan ones? I know when I had Zeds they were always the weak point for anyone with more than 450 ish bhp. Just about every manual Zed I ever drove (lots) had worn synchros as well, even if they were standard power.
