SR Gearbox Solution ??

i ran upto couple months ago, single plate FULL FACE organic srung clutch with 265 federals and never blew a box!!! and te box i had was one from polo that he had re built!!!

i would say rb boxes are fine but alas they only next stage along from sr box!!!

forgive my stupidity but could you not make the r154 box fit, it has a separate bellhousing and isnt it roughly the same size as an sr box

ive got a z31 t5 box sat on the floor with pipes for oil cooler as standard, i dont know how strong they are, supposed to be the same as mustang boxes but stronger than cossie t5 boxes

... iv lunched 8-9 or 10 boxs!...carter blew 13 boxs last year

Jesus, do TG actually order the boxes reconditioned from a cheese factory or something? Thats a fricking retarded amount of boxes killed. :wack:

Not that I can really add much to this as I'm running around 270hp but my CA box has taken plenty of 3rd gear clutch kicks. I'm doing a fair speed at the time though so i guess theres not much speed difference.

How much do 3-gear kits cost these days? Expense up front = money saved in the long run?

Yeah, clearly the v160 is a nice option but its alot of money, if a cheaper R154 or something like it (getrag) then that would be very good indeed.

Even R154 are getting harder to find, and they are not that nice to drive with, the nissan box is the nicest for shifting, but it can't take the powers.

Keep the ideas coming people.

The 3 litre M3 gearbox should be able to withstand lots of torque, while it's still quite affordable. Though it's weaker than the Getrag box from the 3.2 (which is just as strong as the V160), it should be good enough for a torquy SR, plus it's not very heavy for how strong it is.

How about one of these?

The biggest issue I see with boxes blowing is big rev, low speed clutch kicks and up changes. Dont do it and your box will last. Be nice to your car and it will be nice to you.:D

Is this due to wanting bragging rights like "yeah man it was 4th gear for me all round there" or is there a need for low speed high gear changes that Im not understanding?

I wouldnt put too much faith into stock BMW boxes, Ive broke 2 with only 200hp. I imagine the M 6 speeds are good but they cost a bit.

With regards to Tony's post above, afaik the M3 3.0 box is the same as the 328i box which is probably cheaper when searching. I havent broke one of those yet but I havent drifted on one over 210hp.

I was always under the impression that the E36 BMW M3 box wasn't anything special...

I think putting 450ftlb down its shaft will break that.

More about getting big smokes really, i.e. the difference between road speed and wheel speed. Personally I'd rather have less smoke and finish the run.:wack:

That makes sense now tbh. Never had the powers to use gears higher than appropriate for the corner. Its nice to make mad smokes though I guess.

Clarkey Bon would be the person to ask but I think, like yourself, that the BMW 5 sp at least isnt anything special. Plenty good enough for its purpose though.
