SR Gearbox Solution ??

Has anyone ever tried Cryogenic freezing on the gears on the SR Box?
A guy i know here was saying alot of guys with the high horsepower GTR's all over 600hp where now freezing the gears and was working a treat, it has become alot cheaper and available now F1/Rally use and makes the gears up to 4 times stronger!!!

I looked into this and rang around a few places but they all needed to know EXACTLY what metal and treatments the gears went throgh in the factory, i cant find any info on that:(

Jag or BMW Getrag box's are worth a try:nod: Jag 5spd being cheap and having a detachable bell housing makes them a good choice, tho there not indistructable, but worth a go:thumbs:

Are Z32 boxes the same as any other Nissan ones? I know when I had Zeds they were always the weak point for anyone with more than 450 ish bhp. Just about every manual Zed I ever drove (lots) had worn synchros as well, even if they were standard power.

Pretty sure z32/rb25 boxes are the same, or pretty muchy the same.

People though rb25 boxes were the holy grail at the start of the season but lots have been broken.

Surely cyrogenics is worth looking at?

APart from that its gotta be uprated gearsets or complete gearbox setups, trust/quaiffe/hks/hollinger etc. But then again is that step up really worth it? Are you gonna spend 5k+ on gearboxes in your lifetime drifting?

these guys run a e36 m box. (video below)

i had a look into it, but it's a lot of either fab work, or a lot of dosh to get someone to do it for you.

also, mr.bizzle' s14 sold to norway is running an m box like that. not sure who put it in, but i talked to the owner, and he said it was about 2,5K to get it sorted, but that was norwegian prices :wack:

stock boxes are good!! people break them cause they cant change gear proply, people CAN AND WILL bitch at me about this. but read what im writing, i had 370bhp with same torque, 265 federals on the back and in 16months never broke a box and mine was ca box aswell!!

philhad stock late spec 14a box with 430ish bhp and federal 265s and i believe he had next to no issues in couple seasons skidding!!!

i have done the rb box conversion as im running 440bhp and 400lbft with big federals with more power to come, but with the right gearchange and THE RIGHT CLUCTH nissan boxes should last!!!

Thats where im going rong:wack: 2 rb box's in one year on less than 400hp aint good:wack:

paul i told u get rid of that god awful ott clutch!!!

i never broke a single shit 18yr old ca box with 370 bhp and feds because propa gear changes and a propa clutch that had a little slip and slack!!!

paul what clutch are you running, do you change gear low down in the revs at slow speed? i have only just gone to box breaking power and have 2 boxes myself since march this year. but i blame that down to bad shifting.

i agree with what dan is saying, now i try to be less harsh on gear changes

edit: paul surely have less toe in will help you gearbox budget maybe?

Chris, I broke 2 boxes before I changed something on my car and you've broken 2 since you changed something........its not coincidence!

Like Dan says, the way I see it is I'd rather have a little slip n slack in the clutch than keep busting gearboxes.

yeah i see what your saying jord, but im convinced it was down tobad changes on my part, i.e ramming into thrird at low down the rev range. besides the clutch i had from you is sprung so does have a little give in it i reckon. plus that and the fact that the 1st gearbox was 3.5 years old old since i had the car so took lots of abuse and was whining, the one i have in now feels sweet and makes no noises.

Dan what clutch did/do you use.

Didn't this clutch thing get brough up a little while ago? If memory serves Bizzle recommended a carbon clutch because of the way it heats and for once no one disputed it.

I know I was talking to Mitch about his experience with SR boxes and he said a lot of it was driving style on the gear change etc.

afaik the Z32 box is different to any other nissan box.

the Z32TT Boxes are quiet strong. people over here are running them with 500 - 600bhp and one with 730 - never broke since a year. Only the synchros seem to be a bit shitty.

i broke 2 sr20 boxes then i got a S14a box with 30k miles wich was the worst one i ever bought. Its loud chaning gear when its cold is hard, but now its in the car for 2 years. I think that the 'pilot' bearing in the crank caused my 2 blown boxes, as the bearing was really really fucked.

i also think its a bit up to the driver. i have the theory that even clutch kicks can be made smooth and soft :)

All my gear changes are on the limiter:wack: Laggy mo fo! Both times the rb box's have gone is a heafty clutch kick in 3rd:nod: With 265 tyres at 15psi or so at farly low road speeds:wack:

OK, so what clutch kind of a clutch should be used to preserve the gearbox (i.e. the number of discs, pucks and disc material)? What oil should be used?

ha ha theres your problem man, too much grip :wack:, try some more psi and be smoother on the gear changes man, thats what im trying to do just becuase i havent got a budget for boxes :D

I did two SR boxes purely on torque as the car came on boost, so its not just down to gear changes !!!

And I dont think Phil had 265 Federals on when he was still running a stock SR box but i could be wrong.

Isn't the point of this thread to find a gearbox that CAN take that abuse, yeah you need some mechanical sympathy, but these cars take serious abuse and the owners need/want a gearbox that can take it.

What about a mustang box that the cossie boys use or a 350z gearbox?

Be interesting to see where this goes

Thanks John

I forgot about the tremac box's!! cheap as chips new off the shelf and you have a choice of ratios!!

Iv NEVER had a box blow on me on a gear change!! Over the last year or so iv lunched 8-9 or 10 boxs! Most of them have gone on a 3rd gear clutch kick, a few second gear clutch kick, one the bearings seized and one a selector falk broke! Last year i was using a sprung single plate clutch, this year a sprung twin. Mat carter blew 13 boxs last year on a twin carbon unsprung clutch! Mush the same as mine, except he clutch kicked less, most his went on a 2nd to 3rd shift or just as it came on boost in 3rd. He runs loads less traction than me too!

Is the rb box a worthwhile upgrade to the sr for 310bhp? I'v only done one in so far, it went just cruising along, must have stressted it and it just gave up.

I'm running a ACT heavy duty organic so its quite easy on the boxes but hold the torque fine.
