The R32 Chronicles

Well hello there. It has been a long time since I posted a thread on here, however after the forums new revamp i feel like its time to post a build thread.

If you don't know me, which i am 99% sure you don't, My name is Callum. I am the freindly fat guy that you may have seen at drift events up and down the country over the last 8 years. I am part of the staff for Norfolk drift days as well as BDC, but also i am an out and out drift nerd. I would say i am very much involved in the UK scene. Also i may or may not be a part time model. I will let you decide.
IMG_8056.PNG

As you can see. A real stunner.

Now onto my car history. I have had many cars over the years. Including the E34 that i learned to drift in 5 years ago and still have to this day. Ive had a fair few other bmws, an s13 and my favourite of my past cars. A super turbo diesel E34 with a mechanical fuel pump and a big lorry gt22.
IMG_7336.JPG

After building that my bank balance decided that it was time for me to take a step back from owning silly cars for a while. So bought myself a sensible daily e46 330d. Which ended up looking as you see it in the first picture of this thread, albeit minus the fat guy sat on the bonnet all the time. Cruised around in that and started saving.

Now back to another history lesson. Back in 2013 i was trawling the internet and i came across an early 1989 r32 kuro black, manual, turbo. Which as far as i am concerned is the holy grail of r32's and not only that but it was 40 minutes away from us. And £800. Now at the time i was a broke assed student. So my buddy Ash bought it. It had an exhaust, some momo arrows and that was about it. Other than that it was standard And pretty clean.
IMG_7464.JPG

The following years i turned many spanners on this car with ash and it had the original rb20 taken out and put in a 4 door ash had at the time, then an rb25 put in, then another rb20 put in and then that rb20 rebuilt. Along with lots of other things. Underneath done over the years and ended up looking like this in its final guise in Ash's ownership.
IMG_5062.JPG

IMG_5056.JPG

I drove it a few times and fell in love with it. As cheesy as it sounds it is a dream car of mine.

Now the car sat in Ash's yard and slowly it got broken and sold in parts however i always had my eye on it.
IMG_5413.JPG

Fast forward a year or so on and we came to an agreement and the 32 was mine. Now i am in the pretty cool position of knowing a lot of history of the car and having worked on and driven it a few times over the years.

The car sat in the yard a little longer looking very sorry for itself whilst I decided how and where i was going to build.
IMG_6380.JPG

It had no engine or box, hubs, seats, or kit, but it did have headlights, full s13 rear end with a 4:3 diff and shafts, full driftworks rear arms. Rack moved forward, extended bottom arms but no hubs or tie rods.

So i sorted some cut hubs. And some straight 30mm rack spacers, custom made by James Spillaine in Ireland.
IMG_8057.JPG

I also got hold of some stock shocks and springs as well as some stock s14 wheels so i could get it on the ground.
IMG_6493.JPG

I also started collecting parts and when driftworks had their Christmas sale ordered myself some cs2's and really was running out of room in my room for all this car stuff so needed to come up with a plan.

IMG_7140.JPG

I also bought some cheap overs and BN skirt for Mr Bloomfield for mock ups and spares, so off i went to pick that up.

IMG_6665.JPG

Now, whilst all this was going on. Me and a couple of friends put a team together of like minded buddies by the name of East Coast Finest that want to build silly, low cars and have fun with friends. So let me introduce you to their cars. So first up is Carls s14

IMG_8059.JPG

Next up is Adams s15
IMG_8058.JPG

So as you can see, the guys have a certain style and this is the way the 32 will be going styling wise. Also whilst your here check our Facebook page.
https://m.facebook.com/EastCoastFinestuk/

Now we also got our hands on a unit, so all of a sudden the 32 had a home and i had somewhere to build it. So i went to the estate agents. Emptied this, unfortunately i fear not for the last time during this build,
IMG_7693.JPG

And i walked away with the keys. So we started moving in that night, starting with Adam's s15 and some of the parts id collected over time.

IMG_7713.JPG

Including my engine. I had bought a freshly rebuilt rb25 from a good friend of mine Jack Tonkin, he built it for his personal car with a fresh metal headgasket, arp head studs. And 175psi across the board. It had done a little Under a thousand miles when he took it out to replace it with a fully forged one he bought.

IMG_5907.JPG

Now at the same time i also purchaed the custom built equal length manifold jack built too. As a welder fabricator myself i was going to build my own. However jack offered me his at a price I couldn't say no too. I also may have to buy that td06 soon too. But we will see. In an ideal world i would like a gtx3076r.

I also had been searching form the second i had the 32 for some Dmax d1 spec front wings. As, in my opinion anyway, they are the nicest aftermarket wings on offer that are actually any wider. These are plus 30mm. However these are not the easiest things to find. But my buddy Ash, who i bought my 32 from, bought another 32 4 door that had a set on it, and came with a dmax boot spoiler, so i hassled him and hassled him untill he agreed to sell me both haha.
IMG_7614.JPG

IMG_7245.JPG

Anyway once my engine and my parts were in the unit there was just one thing missing, the skyline. So with the help of my friends Darren and Ross it was delivered to my unit, and i was like a pig in shit. So excited to finally get started on building my car.
IMG_7742.JPG

IMG_7743.JPG

And this was where it ended up.

IMG_7744.JPG

Now, i am a fully grown adult, perhaps more grown than i should be, but by no means adult. So the first night the car was in the unit i set to work creating myself some inspiration for the build, I bolted the CS2's on and pushed the skirts and wings on and made myself feel good and then went to home.
IMG_7761.JPG

Then another day i got excited and bolted most of Adams wheels to my car. and some of Carls. Their collection is far better than mine. All of them either 18x11 or 18x12.
IMG_8016.JPG

IMG_7758.JPG
IMG_7897.JPG

I even had some help down the unit from my best friend. Who fully approved obviously because he is a rad dude.
IMG_7861.JPG

Then Carl came to collect his wheels back. Which meant for the first time all three of the teams cars were together. With mine somewhat letting the side down i must admit but still Carl managed to get some awesome photos.
IMG_7795.JPG

I also bought an exeedy hyper single clutch second hand that needed a new friction plate.
IMG_7124.JPG

However i have decided not to use it as i am going to go with a 350z box so i can use a twin plate happily. Which leads me onto another thing. A friend of mine bought an rb to 350z gearbox adaptor so i took it to work mapped it all out. Drew it up in cad and hopefully will be cutting myself one soon. All going to plan that will save me a few quid. Worst case i will just buy myself the same one as my friend as its in his car and working and i am 100% decided i am going 350 box.
IMG_7384.JPG

Now once i had finished messing about bolting wheels I didn't own onto a car that didnt work, I decided i should probably do something productive so i set to work stripping the car down with Ash.
IMG_7886.JPG

Whilst doing we lifted the carpet and did some digging. The results were some rust. But nothing i wasnt aware of so dispite having to sweep a significant amount of my skyline up at the end of the day, i still was pretty happy.
IMG_7887.JPG
IMG_7891.JPG

No biggy i will get to that in time. A few weeks of mayhem ensued with BDC and other events on so i didnt touch the car again untill last week. Where i stripped the car right down to a bare shell bar a bit of bay wiring and equipment and the interior loom and heater matrix.
IMG_8013.JPG

The rear subframe came out nice and easy considering its been in there about 3 year with solid bushes. I expected it to be a nightmare. Next up was the fuel tank, again pretty painless.
IMG_8018.JPG

Next up i needed to get the front high but needed my jack to drop the subframe so with some inspiration i came up with a solution.
IMG_8020.JPG

And about 30 minutes later it was all out and in a heap on the floor.
IMG_8021.JPG

So i dragged it all out and set it in the unit ready to strip it all down ready for blasting and powder coating.
IMG_8023.JPG

And the shell is sat there waiting for the upcoming bank holiday weekend where im hoping to make a start on wire brushing and stripping the underneath and hopefully begining rust repairs and stich welding the chassis.

Now that brings us up to date for now and i hope i haven't bored you too much. And i will do my best to keep this up to date, feel free to give me some feedback or ask any questions you have. I look forward to hearing from you guys.

There seems to be more than a few Nissan build threads at the moment where dealing with rust is just part of the fun. Keep up the good work man!

It's to be expected these days man. My car is 28 years old. And had been in the uk since 2002 so i am surprised its not worse to be honest haha.

Yeah it's easy to forget how old these things are. I think our R32 is the same. We brought it into the UK in 2002 or 2003. It's had a more garaged life than most though. It just get's destroyed in different ways :wack:

Yeah boy !

Keep up the good work dude. Cannot wait to see how this pans out. I know how much you love rusty cars and working on them :P

Really like the way this build thread has been put together, Will be following for sure.

Btw if you're planning running low, knock out the upper two solid mounts and put in a large washer instead, instant subframe rise.

So the bank holiday weekend has been upon us here in the UK and that meant 4 days of freedom. Perfect opportunity to get some work done on the skyline

Day 1....... went into work after being bribed with triple pay. Damm. 1 down 3 days still to go.

Day 2.... well i set the alarm for 9am, woke up at 1pm so that was a good start. Fuck. Well i made it down to the unit with the important essentials.
IMG_8106.JPG

Corona and Sharpies. Everything a man needs to start combatting a 30 year old rusty nissan.

So i moved my buddy Adams s15 outside so I didn't cover it in weld spatter and grinder sparks. It looks good so i took a photo.
IMG_8107.JPG

Now once i was done with messing about i started planning the rest of my weekends time. The plan i came up with was to "quickly" (pahahhahahahahah what a joke) take the rest of the looms out of the car so nothing got destroyed whilst welding, then make a start on the rust rectification.

So i started pulling the loom out. What a fucking mess. 2 aftermarket alarm looms and a turbo timer loom along with countless gauges looms, shit spliced in left right an centre. This was what i was greeted with.
IMG_8110.JPG

After a few minutes swearing at everyone who has ever wired anything into this car i broke out the side cutters and got this mess apart. The. Biggest issue was the current alarm. Which had been wired in by stevie bastard wonder. However after some chopping it was outed.
IMG_8122.JPG

Soon after the rest of the loom. A lot of messes and bodges.
IMG_8116.JPG

Then i had a bit of time left so i broke out the wire wheel and had a look at a few rust spots. Turned out the strut tower had started to come away from the chassis at the seam.

IMG_8119.JPG

I decided id seen enough for one day and it was time to go eat pizza.

Day 3..... well finally it was time to start combatting rust. I wasn't sure wether i was going to tub the front arches or save what was there. So this was what i was faced with.
IMG_8115.JPG

I sat and pondered what was best to do. Whilst sipping on some inspiration juice.
IMG_8126.JPG

Then i thought bollocks to it. Broke out the grinder and made holes.
IMG_8125.JPG

Then i started filling the holes now bare in mind i am a stainless TIG welder by trade and did my apprenticeship as a heavy gauge mig welder. There is nothing i hate more than welding cars. Literally is my worst nightmare. Started wih the nice square flat hole. Went lovely.
IMG_8130.JPG

Then i moved onto the hole nearer the firewall. Which had 2 curves in it. Decided the best way to do this was in 2 pieces. So i made templates in cardboard. Cut them. Folded them both and welded them in.
IMG_8145.JPG

Tidied them up a bit. Job jobbed. Not as nice as id like but does the job.

Then i moved onto my next quandary. To tub or not to tub. Its been something ive been pondering for some time. I decided id leave the stock tubs in for now. But id make some new ones on the rollers at work, tack them in and see how i felt before i chopped the old ones out. I think it will be the nicest way to tidy the bay up and sort all the holes without looking like a patchwork quilt. So i made a template for the profile i wanted and cut some steel.
IMG_8136.JPG

Then i decided i was bored of the car for another day. Brought Adams s15 back inside. Took a moody photo
IMG_8151.JPG

Then i went home.

Day 4.... the mindset of getting loads more rust sorted. The reality was the daily had a punture that i needed to sort and by the time i had done that I couldn't be arsed with any more rust solving. So i thought i would quickly take my manifold off so i can take it to work and weld a new external wastegate flange and flat off the head flange as it has a slight bow in it. So i wanted to sort it all in one hit.

So i started with this.
IMG_8166.JPG
IMG_8167.JPG

And after an hour and a half of swearing, bleeding and rage i had the manifold removed. One of the most infuriating jobs ever. Its a custom manifold and the acess is not as great as you would like, to put it politely.
IMG_8169.JPG

Then i blocked the exhaust ports. Put the cover back over the engine and decided id had enough skyline for one weekend.

Now i didnt make as much progess as i wanted and it looks like i achived nothing. But there was a lot of hours put into this achiving nothing. Its been a while since i built a car and i had forgotten how every 1 hour job seems to turn into a 5 hour job. However its all part of the fun..... right?

Really like the way this build thread has been put together, Will be following for sure.

Btw if you're planning running low, knock out the upper two solid mounts and put in a large washer instead, instant subframe rise.

Cheers Keeve. Got to keep this shit light hearted. Yeah man. That was exactly the plan with the subframe mounts dude.

So I took my manifold to work and flatted out the head flange, was a rather primitive method but it worked a treat.
IMG_8205.JPG

Then i headed up to the workshop, now i have been umming and arring about tubbing the front arches for ages. So i contemplated how i was going to do it with some inspiration juice.
IMG_8207.JPG

Then with a plan in my head about as clear as mud i broke out the grinder.
IMG_8211.JPG

I ended up with this
IMG_8212.JPG

After a momentary feeling of oh bugger. What did i do that for, i had another beer and set too tacking up. I was making templates out of card to get he shape correct. Then transferring it to steel and cutting it. It started to come together ok but took me a little longer than I thought.
IMG_8213.JPG

Then i wanted it to blend in with the factory steel and have the same raidus as the stock steel of the lower pannel that i kept. So after a lot of head scratching and templates i made a pannel i was happy with and tacked it in.
IMG_8217.JPG

Now this took me a lot longer than I anticipated so i had to shoot off before i got this side finished. So thats where im currently up too. with another bank holiday weekend this weekend im hoping to at least get the tubs finished. Then i really should start on the rust situation.

So another bank holiday has been upon us here in the UK and that meant progress on the 32. So on Friday after work i went and got the gas bottle refilled for the welder and prepared myself for a busy weekend. I also had the kind offer of some help on the Saturday from a couple of my friends, Ed and Andy who made the hour and a half trip down to my workshop to help me out.

I woke up on the Saturday morning bright and early ready to meet the lads at my unit and make a big day of it. I was met with a lovely sunny day which was a nice start.
IMG_8260.JPG

I got to the workshop. Opened up, moved Adams s15 outside and then the boys arrived. First things first. An inspirational Corona at 9.30am. Then we set too it.

Andy set to work stripping down the front and rear subframes and suspension ready for shot blasting and painting
IMG_8263.JPG

Me and Ed (mainly Ed) set to work finishing up the passenger side tub. Which we got done pretty fast. Mainly because Ed is a patient man where as i get pissed off when it doesn't fit first time.
IMG_8265.JPG

Happy days. Then we had a chat and another beer and a good old catch up. After about 40 minutes of that we decided to grab some lunch and then get back to work. Which meant Ed got to chop a hole in my skyline. Which im not sure he was too keen on.
IMG_8268.JPG

Once he had done that he started to figure out the drivers side tub whilst i welded up the passenger side.
IMG_8269.JPG

IMG_8271.JPG

IMG_8270.JPG

Now knobhead here, whilst making the passenger side tub. Made the bottom pannel in 2 pieces where i should of made it in one. Which means there is a weld in the middle and it looks like shit. So that may get cut out and redone yet i havent decided.

Now whilst i was welding the tub up Ed had got the drivers side tub pretty well figured out. So we tacked it up of which i forgot to take any pictures. And then went onto the final side pannel.
IMG_8277.JPG

Ed, being an intelligent person made the bottom panel in once piece which looks so much better.

In the mean time. Andy had gotten all the subframes and arms stripped down. Apart from the driveshafts out the hubs due to them being exceptionally tight and me not having a socket and gun combination man enough to undo them.
IMG_8291.JPG

So with all those stripped down they are near enough ready for sand blasting and powder coating. Once i figure out what colour to do them.

So after than Andy was bored so he came and drew a self portrait on my windscreen.
IMG_8276.JPG

Then we got the final panel tacked into the drivers side tub.
IMG_8281.JPG

IMG_8279.JPG

With that the boys had to head home. However i was massively greatful of them coming down to lend a hand.

So i then set to work welding up the drivers side tub.
IMG_8284.JPG

IMG_8283.JPG

IMG_8285.JPG

This tub came out way nicer than the passenger side but its all part of it. I fulled welded the tubs inside and out. So i could grind them back nicely in the bay but still keep the strength.
IMG_8288.JPG

IMG_8289.JPG

On the last weld of the underside of the passenger tub i ran out of gas. Because i am a helmet and didnt check for any leaks when i connected the bottle up in the morning. That put somewhat of an end to my weekends progress as pretty much everything i need to do at the minute involved a welder. So i cleaned up the tubs with a grinder.
IMG_8292.JPG

IMG_8293.JPG

IMG_8295.JPG

Few little bits that could of been done better however most definitely fit for purpose. A little more tidying up with a grinder and some seam sealer in a few places and jobs a goodun. I am real happy with how they came out. I didnt want massive tubs so these are the same width as a stock tub at its widest point, but obviously the whole way across the strut. Hopefully they should provide the clearance needed and i feel they have tidied up the mess that was there before i started.

A massive thanks once again to Ed and Andy for the help. I am really glad to get the bay near enough done welding wise. Its a good feeling to tick something off the list.

There wont be a lot happening to the car for a few weeks as I've got a fair bit on and im also waiting on a few things to be made before i set too starting the underside of the car.

Love a good thread like this lots of talk, lots of pictures and lots of work done buy you n mates, top work mate keep the updates coming

Thanks dude. I always have enjoyed reading threads over the years and its always interesting to see how others do things as well as getting a little snippet of their personality in the way in which they write things. I will do my best to continue to keep this as current and up to date as possible.
