The "when racing was fucking awesome" thread, 70's, 80's, 90's ahoy

80' and 90's Sportscars were ridiculously fast and just plain awesome with the turbos, ground-effects and 400km/h top speeds (Porsche 962 still holds the all time lap record at the Nurburgring)

I actually got to see the stunning Mazda RX792p IMSA car in person at Sebring '92 which I still think is probably the best looking GT car ever built.

The group5 Capri and 320i's were awesome, too bad before my time, but some of the coolest racing I remember watching as a teenager was BTCC. The tech behind them was amazing too with lots of crazy outside-the-box thinking to stay within the rules yet push as much as possible.

The original DTM series,

T'was a 956 actually if I'm being anal :D
Not the full video but you get a good impression of it.

Which reminded me, years and years ago I had a video (was a long time ago) of a load of Derek Bell onboard videos in a 956, Silverstone used to be insanely fast and flowing!

FULL Season Review

Those were the days!! This reminds me, in GranTurismo2 if you took any of the regular models that were used in BTCC, and did the "racing modification" they turned into the actual BTCC car, I remember they had the Primera, Laguna, Vectra, E36, Alfa 156 and all of them turned exactly into the BTCC version

I know it was Stefan Bellof, but I had to go look it up, you're right it was a 956. Interesting to think he may have survived the horrible crash at Spa had he been in a 962 since the major change was extending the wheelbase, keeping the drivers legs behind the axle and increasing front crash structure.

Just watched the videos and wow, what a shame. I've never seen that video of the crash before, car was really destroyed. Shame no one picked him up for the 85 F1 season in a good car, he likely wouldn't have even been still driving sportscars then. Scoring points in a totally crap car in F1 in those days was no small achievement. RIP Stefan Bellof

Hmm, good point about whether the accident would've been survivable in a 962. Definetly would've been in a 962GTi with the carbon tub.
Such a shame he seemed to be forgotten about. Monaco '84 being a case in point, everyone remembers it as Senna chasing down Prost and had the race gone on longer then Senna would've won. Most people forget or just don't know that Bellof was catching both of them even more and probably would've caught them both and won

+1, Bellof was awesome

My current favourite video ever.

Speakers up, it's time for the cars with by far the angriest anti-lag ever, and one of my fave cars ever too.

Repsol Cosworth was amazing.
They're all driving way too straight and gay in that vid though.

AWESOME 80s video showing Audi kicking absolute ass. Also some really good interviews with the drivers, esp Hans Stuck who says some really funny shit (And says about before he learnt to left foot brake to keep the boost up- No ALS in the TransAm cars- He wasn't winning)

Part1 Pikes Peak and GrpB...

Part2 SCCA TransAm racing and 200mph+ crazyness...

Part3 IMSA GTO madness...

My new favourite vid, mostly as I totally bum Renault 5s.

Full 15min vid of the 1.4 turbo, 370bhp, 1060kg mid engine rear drive Renault 5 Maxi GroupB cars, converted to circuit spec, totally rinsing everyone in the 1987 French Super Production race series.
Overtaking Porsches on the straights and the corners.
Racing the Monaco GP track.
Doing 360spins over the finish line.
And looking and sounding fucking badass while doing so.

Shocking video quality, but it is coming on for 30 years old lol
